The culmination of works for Hidden in the Folds spans assemblage, photography, textile and papercut installation.

Chrys Zantis’ fascination with the parallels and possibilities of art and science, especially neuroscience, underpins this profound and responsive exhibition. The culmination of works for Hidden in the Folds spans assemblage, photography, textile, and papercut installation.

The mysterious workings within the folds of grey matter in our brains are expressed while synthesising intricate layers of scientific data, metaphor, and myth. Zantis shows how our personal myth is influenced by different perspectives of un(conscious) experiences, making it a highly relevant and insightful response to the many issues and challenges we face along our individual and collective life journey.

This exhibition extends on Chrys Zantis’ Internal Landscapes (2018) and her residency with Associate Professor Marta Garrido at the Cognitive Neuroscience and Computational Laboratory (University of Melbourne) (2019-2023), and the resulting exhibition, Beneath the Surface (2018-2019), Inside Out (2019) and A Landscape of Resilience (2021.) Her new works Hidden in the Folds (2022-2023) delves deeper into the relationships between the internal and external.

Zantis moves beyond the biological processes that influence the psychological and cognitive aspects of brain function. She poses philosophical questions about consciousness and perception, linking concepts by using a powerful mythological narrative.
