Stanthorpe is the only place in the world – outside the States of course – that Johnny visited regularly, for some two decades – and not to play music!
Johnny, with his wife June Carter, herself a renowned singer with the famous Carter Family, first visited Stanthorpe in the early 1980s and visited regularly thereafter for two decades. They came to visit an old friend from America, who had moved to Australia for family reasons.
Johnny took an instant liking to our little town and its surrounding districts of apple and stone fruit orchards, vineyards, and a wide and empty countryside where he enjoyed riding, hunting, and overall… anonymity.
So, Stanthorpe can legitimately lay claim to being the only place in the world, outside America, which can call itself ‘Johnny Cash Country’.
